EU Commissioner quits after anti-fraud probe

Following a fraud investigation, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli has resigned with immediate effect.

Dalli was under scrutiny by the EU's anti-fraud office OLAF after accusations from tobacco manufacturer, Swedish Match.

The company claimed that an entrepreneur from Malta tried to use his contact with Mr Dalli to gain financial advantages in return for trying to influence future legislation on tobacco products.

OLAF found no payments had been made and no conclusive evidence Dalli was directly involved, but concluded that he had been aware of the scheme.

Dalli, a Maltese politician who previously held a cabinet position in Malta, has been EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy since 2010. Source
