Are Women Happier At Home?

By Suzanne Venker: So this is ultimately a debate about the gender gap—specifically, why it exists. To feminists, it is proof that women are discriminated against left and right. Left-wing women honestly believe that men, as a whole, hire less qualified males over females—in other words, generate less revenue —because they either hate or are threatened by women that much.
Reasonable folks like Gavin McInnes know the real reason women make less than men is because of the choices they freely make. In the video, he mentions the excellent book Why Men Earn Moreby Warren Farrell, although an even broader book on this topic, also by Farrell, is The Myth of Male Power. Both prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Gavin McInnes is right.

The discrimination myth re the wage gap has also been debunked ad nauseam over at Women for Men. Here is Christina Hoff Sommers’ 4.44 minute take on the subject. Having worked alongside both Warren and Christina, I can assure you there is no agenda here. In fact both are self-described liberals. They’re simply committed to truth, which it what makes their work so impressive.

Where the debate with McInnes and Tamara Holder became heated is when McInnes said women are less ambitious than men. Well, of course they are! But the woman on the receiving end of that argument is not an example of most women.

Tamara Holder is not married and does not have children. Naturally, she’s going to be offended by the facts because feminists always get offended when the truth doesn’t apply to them.

Then McInnes says women are “better suited in the home” and are “emotional” beings. Again: duh. And what is Holder’s response? To get emotional! Point made.

McInnes goes on to say most women with children would rather be taking care of their kids or showing up at their kids’ various events than they would be discussing proposals at work. “Most women are not making money because they don’t stay all night at the office. They don’t go the extra mile. They don’t work all weekend.”

To which Holder asks defensively, “Why am I staying here?” (Meaning: Why does she go the extra mile and stay at the office all weekend?)

And that’s where Gavin messed up. He probably didn’t know at that point that Holder isn’t a mother (or maybe he did, and he just chose to go in a different direction) because instead of responding that she’d be happier married with kids, which is not his place to say, he could have said, “Because you don’t have kids!!!!!!”

A woman without children can obviously go the extra mile because she has zero family responsibilities. Indeed, childless women out-earn men! This would have been a great time to mention that fact.

Still, Gavin McInnis is refreshing, He tells it like it is, and he tells it on TV the same way you can imagine his saying it over a beer. That’s the reason this exchange is deemed “controversial.” It wasn’t that McInnes said anything that wasn’t true. It was that he said it at all, that he said it with conviction, and that he said it to the very demographic for whom it does not apply. I know the feeling well.

As for my opinion, I would never suggest that every single woman on the plant is happier married with kids. There are always exceptions to every rule. But that doesn’t change the fact that the rule exists.

I will say, however, that Holden’s defensiveness makes you think. If Tamara Holden were truly at peace with the choices she’s made, she would have no reason to get her back up about what most women are like. She’d just accept that she’s not like most women and call it a day.

Gavin McInnes was right on the money when he said feminism makes women miserable. The resentment toward men (Did you hear Holden’s disdain for the idea of coming home to a man in a three-piece suit?) that women harbor as a result of our feminist culture is off the charts. No woman can possibly be happy when they’re busy being that bitter.

At the end of the day, all McInnes was trying to point out was that men and women are vastly different creatures—and that this is not only okay, it’s great! Most women are, by nature, loving, emotional and maternal. It is feminism that makes women think this is a bad thing. Not only do feminists have no respect for men and children, their ultimate goal is to pretend the sexes are the same and that no gender is more suited than the other to any one task. Women who follow this creed are destined to be miserable.

As one commenter named Ron, 66, notes over at Fox News in response to my article Why men won’t marry, “This new equality (i.e. “sameness”) is difficult enough in the vigor of youth, and hopefully they will sort it all out as they age because truthfully, if they do not, regret is an awful thing to live with. And being old and alone, regret may be all they have.”
