Philip Davies Hits Back At Women’s Equality Party: Sophie Walker Is The Politically Correct Sexist, Not Me

"The Women’s Equality Party clearly doesn’t believe in true equality between men and women
By Felicity Morse: Philip Davies has hit back at Sophie Walker after the leader of the Women’s Equality Party said she would be running against the Conservative MP in Shipley because the constituency “deserves an MP who will prioritise representing them and the issues that are important to their constituency, rather than using parliament as a stage to play out attention-seeking performances.”
The Tory parliamentarian, who has in the past campaigned against “feminist zealots”, hit headlines most recently for suggesting that the Women and Equalities committee, on which he sits, should be renamed the Equalities Committee.
Additionally he attracted criticism for filibustering a bill on domestic violence, arguing in a 78 minute speech that the Istanbul convention should be blocked because it was discriminatory and sexist as it only focused on violence against women and girls, and not on violence perpetrated on men and boys.
Equality between men and women On hearing that Ms Walker would be standing against him in his West Yorkshire constituency, and that she had told the Guardian he was “basically a sexist misogynist who puts his own ego ahead of his constituents”, Mr Davies told the i: “I have asked Sophie Walker on multiple occasions to give one quote from my 12 years as an MP where I have asked for women to be treated less favourably than men and she hasn’t been able to come up with one. “All I have ever said – as people can see from my speeches -is that all legislation should apply equally to men and women. “How that can be sexist is beyond me. It is Ms Walker who is a politically correct sexist as she clearly opposes legislation treating men and women equally and she also believes in positive discrimination. The Women’s Equality Party clearly doesn’t believe in true equality between men and women”. Conservative majority Mr Davies won the Shipley seat with a majority of 9,624 at the last election, with 50 per cent of the vote. Labour took 31 per cent and Ukip came in third with 8.9 per cent. The Greens were in fourth place with 5.3 per cent. However the Guardian suggests other parties, such as the Greens, may stand down at a local level to allow the WEP to win against Mr Davies. The Women’s Equality party was founded in 2015 by broadcaster Sandi Toksvig and the journalist Catherine Mayer. Sophie Walker, who leads the party, is a former journalist of 20 years. Ms Walker said at the time Philip Davies tried to block the women’s rights bill, known as the Istanbul Convention, that it was “deeply concerning that some MPs still consider women’s equality a threat to men”. Ms Walker added: “Male survivors need appropriate services to rebuild their lives, but that does not mean that men’s needs should be at the centre of services for women who have survived male violence. “Violence against women and girls is not gender neutral – and as long as we fail to understand this we cannot hope to bring an end to it.” The survivors of rape and sexual assault who attended the debate also expressed anger over Mr Davies’ “idiotic” stunt.
